Coach is responsible to bring out the best of his players
and make them successful. However he should not take over their lives. He
should coach them, guide them, teach them and motivate them towards success.
Coach should understand how to use positive reinforcement technique to get
results. In volleyball, the coach should focus on teaching their players
skills, techniques and strategy to win games. A good coach should always let
his team feel comfortable and confident enough to play without fear. As a coach,
you should treat your players like professionals (not children). You should
encourage them to do things right as well as wrong. Players may make mistakes,
but they should never feel like punishment. Punishment does nothing except
cause resentment. As a coach, if you want your player to improve, you have to
help him realize what he is doing right and what he is doing wrong. If you
criticize your players regularly, they will lose confidence in themselves and
in your coaching abilities. Be honest with them about the problems they face
and try to solve those problems together. Do not blame your players for making
mistakes or being inconsistent. Instead, praise them when they perform well and
give constructive criticism where necessary. Always thank your players for
their efforts. They deserve it.
Here we discuss some Responsibilities of Coach in Volleyball Match
Be responsible for your team
The coach's primary
responsibility is to work with the players' skill level and improve their
potential. In addition to teaching them how to play volleyball, coaching is
about forming a positive environment where each player feels comfortable to
learn and reach his/her full potential. Therefore, coaches should always have
the goal of helping players develop individually and collectively throughout
the entire season.
Keep players healthy and safe
As a volleyball
coach, it is your duty to make sure that your players stay healthy while
playing the sport. At times, injuries may occur. The coach must take time to
educate players on proper techniques to prevent injury. In addition, he/she
should teach them how to deal with injuries appropriately and avoid recurrence.
Lastly, coaches should make sure that they treat injured teammates equally and
do not favor anyone over others.
Motivate players and keep them focused
Coaches should
motivate and encourage players to achieve their best performance. To succeed,
players need passion, dedication, and determination. However, some young
athletes lose focus easily due to lack of enthusiasm. If you notice that one of
your players lacks interest in practicing, you must address the issue
immediately. You can increase motivation by having fun with the players and
giving them encouragement.
Monitor the game and give feedback
Because the game is
fast paced and often unpredictable, coaches need to monitor the game closely
and provide feedback to players to help them improve. Coaching requires
constant communication and coordination between the coach and the players.
Set high expectations
To maintain a high
standard of excellence, set high goals for your players. Players should know
what they're capable of achieving before entering practice. As a coach, you
should explain to them what type of improvement they have to make in order to
achieve success.
Communicate effectively
A good coach
communicates effectively with his/her players. He/she should listen to the
players' requests and concerns, address any problems, and share information
with the players. Furthermore, he/she should create a strong relationship based
on trust and mutual respect with players.
Understand the rules
Although not an
official rule, understanding the basic rules of the game is necessary for a
coach to communicate effectively with the players. Basic knowledge includes
such rules as serving, passing, receiving, setting, ball control, spikes, etc.
Coach should be Skillful Person
Coaches have to first and foremost teach skills to their
team members. A volleyball coach should always know how to play the game
correctly and should also be able to teach his/her players how to do things
properly. He/she should make sure that not only the physical aspects of the
game are learned, but also the mental aspects. Even though coaches cannot
directly control what happens on the court, they still need to help their teams
become successful. Coaches are responsible for teaching their players specific
techniques and drills in order to help them improve their athletic abilities.
Coach should Motivate Players
Coaches provide
motivation, accountability, and self-discipline for their players. In order to
keep track of their players’ progress, coaches must motivate them and hold them
accountable to achieving goals. This helps in making sure that the players
practice hard and follow through with what they set out to do. The
responsibility of being accountable and motivating players falls on the
shoulders of the coaches. By doing this, they ensure that their players will
get results and succeed at the sport.
Understanding Strengths and Weaknesses
Coaches need to
understand each player's strengths and weaknesses. Each player has different
attributes and qualities and therefore needs to be treated differently. The
coach should use these differences to develop strategies that will work best
for each individual athlete. If a basketball player is fast, then he/she should
focus on developing quickness; whereas if a volleyball player is strong, the
coach should emphasize muscular endurance.
Coach should be Supportive Person
Coaches should be
supportive and encouraging. They should convey encouragement and praise along
with constructive criticism and feedback. Without proper guidance, athletes may
tend to slack off and not give their full effort. Coaches should guide their
players through the game and offer advice whenever necessary. They should
encourage and praise their players' efforts and accomplishments.
Coach should be Problem Solver
Coaches must also
help resolve conflicts. When there is conflict between teammates, coaches
should address the issue immediately and attempt to solve it before things
escalate. Coaches must also be able to assess and evaluate situations and
problems effectively. They should listen carefully and objectively without
getting emotionally involved. They should learn to calmly deal with
disagreements and remain objective throughout the process.
Atmosphere of Better Playing Games
Coaches should
create an atmosphere for success. To maintain good sportsmanship among the
players, coaches should avoid harsh words and abusive language. Instead, they
should encourage respectful communication and cooperation. Moreover, coaches
should also establish rules and regulations for their teams. Doing this will
help players follow them and respect them.
Team Unity Promotion
Coaches should
promote team unity. Team unity refers to the sense of having a single purpose and
goal and working together towards attaining those goals. A coach should ensure
that all her/his players are united in accomplishing the same task. He/she
should try to foster teamwork instead of competition.
Coach as a Role Model
Finally, coaches should always remember that they are role models. Just as parents model discipline for their children, coaches should be able to demonstrate leadership, accountability, and dedication to the game. As a result, players will want to emulate their coaches and be willing to strive for excellence.
Responsibility towards Team
The coach should
motivate each player individually as well as collectively. He/she should create
a climate where everyone feels comfortable enough to express their ideas and
opinions. At times, he/she may need to give tough love. However, the coach
should not make fun of his/her players. All players should have equal
opportunity to perform and contribute to the team.
Responsibility towards Players
A coach should
encourage his/her players to become better individuals. A coach should expect
his/her players to follow instructions given by him/her. If the player does
something wrong, he/she should tell them about it. Coaches should guide their
players to learn from past mistakes and try to avoid repeating them.
Responsibility towards Opponent
Coaches should
motivate their players to play hard while being respectful to their opponents.
In addition to winning games, they should remember to practice sportsmanship.
Coaches should keep in mind that the game is only half-over if the match is
still going on.
Responsibility towards Referee
Involving referees is
necessary to ensure fair play. Whenever officials make a call, they must
provide reasons to justify their decision. Officials should take pride in
enforcing rules. Even though referees are often considered to be mere umpires,
they may sometimes make the difference between winning and losing.
Responsibility towards Organization
As a coach, he/she
should always be aware of how his/her actions affect others. Because coaches
have authority over their teams, their decisions can have consequences. When
making decisions, they should consider the potential effects on their players
and environment.
Responsibility toward Fans
Fans should never
distract the attention of the players or coaches. Coaches should make sure that
spectators remain calm and do not disrupt game play. As a coach, he/ she should
lead his/ her players to victory. Fans should applaud when the team performs
well and boo when the team fails.
